The deep sea is home to mysterious and interesting animals that dwell in environments of extreme pressure, cold, and darkness. Such unexpected sightings have been rare lately, though there have been sightings of deep-sea animals surfacing on the ocean surface recently. 2. Blood-Red Jellyfish 
This enigmatic jellyfish was found at 2,300 feet off Newport, Rhode Island, in 2021. Its stark coloration renders it all but invisible in its deep-sea environment, where red light cannot travel. 

3. Glass Octopus 
During a 2021 Central Pacific expedition, scientists were stunned by the glassy loveliness of a glass octopus. Its nearly transparent body gives a glimpse into the anatomy of deep-sea animals, which is rare. 

4. Frilled Shark 
Rarely encountered by fishermen, the frilled shark is a living fossil with a snake-like appearance and needle-sharp teeth arranged in rows. Occurring at depths of up to 4,500 feet, its surface appearances are infrequent but captivating. 

5. Giant Sea Spider
These spectral arthropods, which live in the waters of Antarctica, possess spindly legs whose circumference is bigger than a dinner plate. Their pressure- and cold-tolerance is so extreme that sightings on the surface are a marvel.
